Can someone add clarification as to why creating primary keys has a separate design tab?

Is it to allow an easy way to create multi-column keys?

Is there a way to indicate a single filed is a primary key when you create the filed or is only accomplished through the primary key design tab?

FEATURE REQUEST
If you cannot select a checkbox in the field creation table can this option be added (for single filed primary keys)?

Yes, that was the reason.
Created a feature request for it: http://valentina-db.com/bt/view.php?id=8086
But usually it is not a simple checkbox, it can indicate a position in the multi-column key when it is used.
