I need to add reports to my Xojo application. What do I need from Valentina? I already use cubesql (sqlite) and ms-sql server db. Also I need to use reports with parameters can I do that with Valentina reporting? Hopefully my questions are clear, otherwise let me know. Thanks

Hi, Ab

It is necessary to have:

  • Valentina Studio Pro - to design the reports
  • V4RB plugin (with appropriate Valentina Reports ADK serial keys) - to generate reports from Xojo application.

Note, free Valentina Studio also contains limited functions to try reports designing, if you haven't done it before (it is possible to create a new project, setup datasources, create queries and reports, but all objects exist until an application restart)

Without a serial V4RB plugin works in a demo mode, but it should be enough for evaluation purposes.

As for SQLite datasource - reports can't be generated from cubeSQL, but either from the local SQLite database, or SQLite database hosted by Valentina Server.
MS SQL database datasource is supported.

There are two kinds of parameters, that can be used in reports:

  • Query parameters (for example, here's a query with parameter: SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE f1=$P(parameter1))
  • Expression parameters (used in expression fields, and act like a constants)

Which one are you interested in?

Let me add:

* I think you can easy switch from cubeSQL to Valentina Server to host SQLite db.
* FREE license of Valentina Server for own usage have 10 SQLite connections. cubeSQL have only 3, as I remember.

* you will find that our API is 100% compatible to Xojo API, while cubeSQL's binding differ.
* We have show on Xojo forum about year ago bench that VServer with SQLite db is few times faster of cubeSQL.

* Note, that working with Valentina Server hosting SQLite db, and using the same Valentina Server as yet Report Server you get additional speedup, because Report use SQLite db directly as local.

In Valentina WIKI present section Videos.

Here you can find videos about how install VStudio, VServer and each ADK for each OS.

For VStudio Pro and VServer - you can find videos about usage of Reports

Thank you all for your input. Regarding DB I will be using MS-SQL Server first, because I already have an application running against such a DB. I need to know the flexibility of the reporting. For example can I pass a datasource to the report from my application or pass parameters from input fields.

And do you have some examples that working with Xojo.

Let me know please.

Yes you can pass datasource and set parameters values from your application.

See description in attachment of what you can pass to MakeNewReport method from your application with small examples.

In short it accepts:
* Report name or index
* Datasource string
* Query string (or empty string to use query, stored in the project).

After calling the MakeNewReport method it is possible to set parameters values, see links at the bottom for description and general overview.

And yes, there are examples on how to work with reports from desktop and web applications, you may be interested to see the following examples:

Here's a reference:
http://www.valentina-db.com/docs/v5/V4RB_Reference_5_en.pdf

But it doesn't contain recently added API methods yet - for example, SetParameterValue, PrintToLocalPrinter.

To have the most fresh information it is better to use our wiki.

hi Ab,

- please note that OmegaBundle finishes today (Sunday 15 May 2016)

- Software you mention is not in our list of Competitive Upgrade Tools. Even if it was, bundle includes MANY software vendors, not related to us. And bundle already have super huge discounts.
