Hello.
I'm using Valentina Studio and I was wondering what were the command line parameters to open it already connected to a particular server/database.
And why not, directly open a SQL Editor Window on it.

It is the last thing missing for us to replace pgAdmin by valentina Studio in our company.

Thanks

Hello Ghislain,

Currently the command line parameters are used only for report generation.

But we're planning to support JavaScript inside of the Valentina Studio, so it should be possible to run custom scripts from the command line.

And also - why the bookmark can't be used to establish a connection? Not convenient or...?

1) I guess command line is used to writer some bash / bat automated scripts?
If you have right now some scripts around pgAdmin, may be you can copy them here or send privately here on forum to me, then we can see what exactly you using and how.

2) I can see why you may want to specify in command line server/db
but I do not see how command line parameters related to SQL editor?

3) I think its easy enough for us to add any command line params you may want.

Thanks for your quick reply.

The need is to be able to write queries on a particular server (by now we have about 400 servers).
The servers are managed using a home made software where we can filter them etc ... to detect the ones we have to execute queries on.
(They are all around the country and their IP could change. These servers send us some informations like their IP every day so the use of the bookmark are not convenient for us. Our software is here to replace the bookmark - and do much more things of course).

From our software we have a button that executes : pgAdmin3.exe /qc "hostaddr={server IP} port={server Port} dbname={a database} user={a user}" /f {path to a text file containing some SQL commands}

With this command, pgAdmin opens a SQL query Window optionnaly prefilled with the SQL commands inside a given file (containing queries performing basic checks like server identity check for example) on the given server.

(If it could perform the SQL content of this file with a "/performQuery" parameter for example, it would be a bonus).

I was looking for something similar using Valentina Studio (vstudio.exe {parameters of server to connect and SQL command to prefill inside a SQL Editor window}).

Is it something interesting according to you ? Could It be added in a near future ?

Okay, so pgAdmin opens SQL Editor, but not execute queries, and yes should be parameter to execute them automatically.
I see idea.

Interesting who have asked pgAdmin team add such feature
You? :)

I think this is not hard and we can add it easy to 7.1 or even 7.0.x
We will see.

I didn't ask them, I found this searching for an automation from our soft to allow our dev team to execute SQL queries easily on a given server (I don't want to build my own SQL Editor, you do this much better than I could ;) )

Great if you can add this in a future build :D

Thanks

Hello,

I've tested it on Windows 7 64 bits. Everything works fine.

I'm going to replace pgAdmin by Valentina Studio in our internal tools ;)

Thank you very much.

btw, any points WHY you prefer Valentina Studio over pgAdmin, will be useful for us and may be others.

Also we would like always hear about any good features in pgAdmin (and other tools), which you would like to see in VStudio.

I prefer :
- the way you present the results in the SQL Editor (color per row, Null are clearly different than empty strings, boolean is shown as check box and not just "f" or "t";)
- you get an history of the various sql queries and their output
- your diagram creation tool to show the links starting from one table and showing its referenced ones
- your completion is much efficient

I compare all of these points to pgAdmin 1.16 (the one we've been using for years)

And of course, Valentina Studio can interact with other database systems.
It's better to have only one tool to know to manage all your database systems ;)

Hello Ruslan,

Something that could be added in Valentina Studio (pgAdmin already does it) : in the SQL Editor query output, the colum type could be displayed (under the column name).
This is usefull when you test a query and have to integrate it in your programmation language.
Here is a picture uploaded to compare both products.
(As you can see, pgAdmin doesn't display "NULL" for null values so it can be confusing to make the difference between a NULL value and an empty string. But fortunatly, Valentina does it !)

Hi Ghislain,

I think field type can be seen in a tooltip on column header. Please check it.

IS this okay or you really want see it for each column permanently?
